FAQ's

Where are the bottles manufactured?

Our manufacturer is near Shanghai in mainland China. Bottles are shipped into our UK warehouse by seafreight. We have searched all over the World for the highest quality bottle manufacturers and we ensure that our manufacturers continually maintain high standards of quality in production and ensure a safe and compliant working conditions for the employees. The manufacturer works to BS EN ISO9000 quality standards and with regular material conformance tests through external accredited bodies. Our manufacturer maintains BSCI approval which is the control of Environmental compliance, working conditions and Social Compliance and we ensure they maintain high levels of social and ethical responsibility.

We have a small team of dedicated quality personnel based in China who manage our procurement and quality inspections at source and we carry out further inspection and sampling on products in our UK warehouse and record quality performance of all of our products through a closed loop corrective action system.

We have tried to source products in the UK or Europe but have never been able to find a supplier.

What are the bottles made from?

Our bottles are all stainless steel made from highest grade 304 or 18/8 stainless steel. This is food grade/surgical grade stainless steel. It is resistant to corrosion and is chemically very inert. It doesn’t impart any nasty odours or tastes into your drinks like other materials can. Most importantly is is 100% BPA free and toxin free. Your drinks will be safe. Many consultant oncologists and specialists in fertility treatment recommend stainless steel bottles because they are toxin free. Bottles do not have any linings or coatings on the inside.

Our products conform and are certified compliant to FDA, LFGB – the highest standards in food safety including EU Protocol 2011:10 which confirms items do not contain any harmful endocrine disrupting chemicals like BPA and BPS amongst others

Do the bottles have any lining?

No they are pure 304 grade stainless steel. Aluminium bottles are lined with plastic because aluminium is toxic but stainless steel bottles have no linings. This also means they do not degrade even when they have been dented, battered and bruised, they are still 100% safe and the best material to carry your beverage in.

We strongly recommend you to research before you purchase any plastic bottles claiming to be BPA free (they probably contain BPS or similar and can degrade over time which exacerbates the leaching of chemicals in to your beverage. BPS has been shown to be as harmful as BPA). Similarly, aluminium bottles always have some form of lining or coating in the inside that does degrade over time or can become damaged leaving your beverage in direct contact with aluminium. The newer ranges of aluminium bottles claim to have BPA free or even plastic free coatings but they generally have a form of plastic with BPS or another chemical cocktail to form a barrier against the potentially toxic aluminium. There is plenty of available research on both options. The most inert, least toxic options are glass or stainless steel.

Is stainless steel safe?

Stainless steel is extremely inert and does not impart any flavours, odours or chemicals into your beverage. It is widely used in the food and drinks industry as it is the safest material to be in contact with food stuffs. It is also used medically, including for implants. All of our products are 304 grade or 18/8 stainless steel. The composition and properties of 304 grde stainless steel are widely available online.

Although 304 grade stainless steel is rust resistant it can form tiny rust patches over time or when exposed to saline conditions, rust spots are harmless and can be readily removed by scrubbing your bottle.

The plastic caps we use are BPA/BPS free, Non Leaching, toxin free polypropylene. It is a tough plastic, easy to clean but it is more brittle than normal plastic. We do have an all steel cap option. All caps have a food grade silicone sealing ring. Silicone is toxin free.

Why are your lids plastic if plastic is so bad?

Polypropylene is the only plastic that is BPA/BPS and Phthalate free. It is non leaching, certified safe and it is the most readily recycled plastics in the World.

Our caps are manufactured using Ocean Harvested Polypropylene – this can be discarded fishing nets.

Polypropylene is a tough plastic, easy to clean but it is more brittle than normal plastic. We do have an all steel cap option. All caps have a food grade silicone sealing ring. Silicone is toxin free.

Are your bottles free from nanoplastics?

Yes.. Typically, nanoplastics are produced by PETs, the clear plastic single use bottles. Polypropylene is inert and does not readily shed plastic particles. Polypropylene also does not contain the endocrine disrupting chemicals that are the biggest concern with nanoplastics.

How do I clean bottles?

To ensure your bottles have a long life here are a few tips:

  • Coloured, painted bottles, should be Hand Washed. For daily cleaning, wash bottles in warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly and leave to drain upside down.
  • For more thorough cleaning use a bottle brush and give it a good scrub inside particularly after smoothies and juices.
  • If your bottle begins to smell we recommend either soaking in a sterilising solution like Milton Fluid or using baking powder to neutralise any nasty niffs.
  • Only sports caps are suitable for the dishwasher.
  • The paints and inks we use on our bottles are lead free and toxin free and we endeavour to ensure they are environmentally responsible. These inks are not as impenetratable as solvent heavy inks and, as with anything which is painted, it is possible to scratch or chip the paintwork. To ensure your painted bottle keeps looking tip top please handwash it and if you are concerned about it getting scratched or damaged invest in a protective jacket.

Can I dishwash bottles and caps?

Any cap which is hollow ie the All Steel cap, should not be washed in a dishwasher in case it fills with water. The All Steel Cap should be wiped clean. Any other cap can be placed in the dishwasher. but we strongly advise handwashing them and investing in a tiny brush or pipe cleaner to clean nozzles.

Any unpainted or nude bottles can safely be washed in a dishwasher but we do recommend handwashing painted or coloured bottles just in case it affects the painted finish.

Do bottles fit into standard bike cages?

Yes, check the dimensions, but the 500ml,and 800ml straight bottles fit perfectly into standard bike cages. We recommend ‘nude’ bottles for bike cages as painted bottles can easily get scratched by the cage. Alternatively, get a bottle jacket. This will protect your bottle from scratches and stop your bottle rattling in a looser bike cage.

Can I put hot liquids in the bottles?

Our Insulated bottle range are best suited for keeping drinks hot or ice cold. The two layers of stainless steel provide a vacuum plus an additional layer helps to provide superior isothermal performance. Our Tough Canteen and Curvy Canteen bottles are NOT insulated so will not keep drinks at the preferred temperature.

Can I put acidic drinks in the bottles?

Yes. Stainless steel 304 grade is resistant to acids. Ensure you wash the bottle thoroughly after sweet  or acidic drinks.

Can I freeze the bottles?

We wouldn’t recommend it but we are aware of many customers who do put the bottles in the freezer. Ensure the bottle is upright and without a cap as the liquid will expand when frozen.

How long will the bottle last, what happens is the paintwork is scratched?

Bottles will last indefinitely as long as you look after them and they don’t suffer excessive wear and tear. Caps should be replaced more frequently for hygiene reasons. We recommend changing your caps every year.

Any painted metal surface can become readily scratched through use or damage. If you are concerned about scratches to paintwork then definitely go for a nude (unpainted) bottle or invest in a jacket. We are sorry but we cannot accept returns or claims on damaged paintwork. Try our new gelly bottoms to protect bottle bases from scratchy surfaces. Please note that painted bottles should be carefully handwashed. Dishwashing painted bottles is not advised because it may lift or damage external paintwork. If this does happen your bottle is still usable.

Is your production process eco friendly?

Our manufacturer maintains the ISO14001 approval, this is the universal regulation for environmental performance. They also maintain the BSCI (Social , ethical and environmental standard) approval and are regularly audited.

Our paints and inks are as eco friendly as we can source. We endeavour to use inks which have no toxins and are not damaging to the environment.

Do I have rust stains in my bottle?

All our bottles are made from 304 or 18/8 stainless steel which is safe, durable, BPA-free and highly resistant to rust. If your bottle appears to have rusted, it’s probably just a mark left from the electropolishing process. Sometimes electrolytes left on the surface turn a rust colour, but it’s harmless. To remove residue, soak your onegreenbottle overnight in hot water and baking soda or white vinegar. Follow the soak with a good scrub using a bottle brush.

If you have any concerns please send us an email to admin@onegreenbottle.com with a photo.

My bottle smells.....Help!

304 or 18/8 grade stainless steel is inert and does not retain flavours or smells. If you have already given it a good scrub with a bottle brush and warm sopay water try mixing a quarter or a cup of vinegar and 4 tablespoons of baking soda in warm water and let it soak overnight. Rinse well with warm soapy water and then with plenty of fresh water and leave upside down to drain.

Do one green bottles have BPA or BPS?

Certainly not! One green bottle started in 2006 as a safe and healthy solution to plastic water bottles and all our products are BPA/BPS-free. We chose 304 food-grade stainless steel instead of aluminium or plastic because stainless steel is inherently safe and toxin free. All caps are BPA-free polypropylene (pp#5) and we offer stainless steel cap options like the https://www.onegreenbottle.com/product/draft-classic-collection-screw-caps-to-fit-evolution-tough-and-curvy-one-green-bottles/  for those that prefer a plastic-free product.

Are the polypropylene (pp#5) caps safe?

One green bottle uses polypropylene (pp#5) because it contains no Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical that leaches from some kinds of plastic, and has been linked to various diseases including cancer. Polypropylene has no known leaching characteristics but is slightly softer than other types of plastic. The harder the plastic the more chemical compounds it contains to stay robust.

Are caps interchangeable between bottles?

In order for our bottles to live a full enjoyable life, we try and give you options to stay eco-friendly and sustainable as possible by being able to change/replace the cap or buy new seals/valves for said cap.

As we have a range of bottles, we try to keep the categories for new caps as simple as possible.
