Sigg and Gaiam lied about BPA
Sigg and Gaiam lied about BPA

Check your SIGG bottle! SIGG admits that before August 2008, the inside liner of it’s wildly popular stainless steel bottles contained BPA.  In California, stores such as Whole Foods, REI and Mollie Stones have been busy pulling the old Bisphenol A (BPA) bottles from shelves. BPA is a hormone disrupting ingredient that is banned in Canada, but not in the U.S. Stores that sell SIGG bottles are now offering customers a FREE replacement or refund. It’s easy to check and see if you purchased a SIGG containing BPA. Simply take a look at the inside rim (liner) of your SIGG bottle, if it is GOLD, then you are entitled to a replacement. The GOLD rim liners are the bottles in question.  You can also get a FREE replacement through the SIGG website on-line at www.mysigg.com.  The new and BPA-free SIGG bottles, according to SIGG, have beige colored liners. SIGG says it started selling the new BPA-free bottles in August of 2008.

This announcement comes as a huge disappointment for California families everywhere that purchased SIGG bottles. Many of us shelled out $20 or more and made the switch to the stainless steel SIGG bottles to better protect our kids and cut down on the use of plastic bottles. For years SIGG touted itself as an eco-friendly company. Even Hollywood’s biggest names such as Cindy Crawford, Madonna, David Beckham and Julia Roberts used SIGG bottles. CEO Steve Wasik admits in a letter on it’s website that the bottles contained “trace amounts” of BPA. During testing, Wasik claims that the BPA in the liners did not “leach.”

SIGG has been under fire recently by some environmental groups for not disclosing more detail about the liners. Many groups have been skeptical about their safety for awhile. SIGG often challenged them and even responded publically saying the liners were “non-toxic.”  So now for many families in the Bay Area and elsewhere, the decision will be to either get a replacement SIGG bottle or take the refund money and buy something else.
They have fooled us and lied to us in the past, why should we trust in them now?
